A reporter desperate for a story tries to interview a gangster's girlfriend jailed in a small town. He gets himself thrown in the same jail and runs into a female reporter with the same idea, but thinks she is the girlfriend he wants to interview.

Clifton likes being a barber in Washington DC where he works in the business started by his father. He also enjoys being single but his widowed Mama Eloise has other ideas and wants him settled like his sister Tracy and her conservative husband Leonard.

A love triangle occurs between the publisher's daughter Betty Moody. comic book artist Tim Jones, and the company's wily manipulative manager Hilton Payne. In addition, Betty's dad, Phineas Moody suffers from severe melancholy; and an emergency cure of laughter is required to save his health.
